Twenty Club kids from the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama -Sonny Callahan Branch got an opportunity to shop with a cop at Academy Sports + Outdoors,7460 Airport Boulevard, thanks to efforts from former Club kid and St Louis Battlehawks quarterback AJ McCarron. The children ranged from 8 through 12 years old and came from the Sonny Callahan Branch of the Boys and Girls Club of South Alabama.
McCarron said he could relate to the children’s experience at their Boys & Girls Club. “I played baseball there for their baseball team one summer and played basketball, and it really helped me. It meant a lot to me to have somewhere to go and be around other kids and enjoy sports and the care that those people provide there. It’s awesome to be able to team up with them and help give back, being that I was there a long time ago.”
Club kids were given a $125 gift card to shop for their favorite items with assistance from representatives from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office and the police departments of Mobile, Chickasaw, Saraland, Prichard and Semmes. Thursday’s event is the second shopping spree of the year hosted by McCarron. In July, he presented 15 youths registered for his football camp with a $150 gift card to shop at Academy Sports + Outdoors.
