Optimist Boys & Girls Club celebrates last Pancake Breakfast on Plaza Drive

The Optimist Boys & Girls Club of Plaza Drive held its final Pancake Breakfast Saturday, March 25, at 1517 Plaza Drive, and it was an extraordinary occasion! After 14 years, the Club is moving to a new location.   Friends, families, volunteers, and members of the RV Taylor community reminisced, enjoyed a hearty breakfast with all the trimmings, entertainment, silent auctions, and giveaways, live performances from Bri Burrell, Spoken Word of Mobile, Mobile Optimist Drummers, the Mobile Alabama Africa Town Drummers (M.A.A.D.) DJ Quinton, Alvin King, and the 5th K’nection Jazz Band and Excelsior Band.

William Burks, Optimist Boys & Girls Club director, appreciates the support shown to the Club. “Hats off to my amazing staff, my family, community council, community partners, my Church (Mt. Olive Baptist Church #1), my fraternity (Omega Psi Phi), Omega Lamplighters, and the Maysville community for making this event one of the outstanding community events in the City of Mobile,” Burks says. The success of the breakfast isn’t possible without the generosity of Wings of Life and food donations from Walmart and Greer’s.

Vendors in attendance were Mobile County Health Department, Family Health, WIC Mobile, Azalea Trail Maids, Project GRIP (Gun-Related Injury Prevention), I C U. Counseling & Mental health Support Services, LLC, Sassy Sunshine Says, Bri Burrell, Miss Baldwin County, and P&L Seafood Food Truck. They shared resources on available programs and services with breakfast attendees to keep them informed and health aware. Proceeds from the event help fund youth development programs at the Club.

Burks is excited to see what the future has in store for the Optimist Boys & Girls Club and is deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed over the years—it is because of you we can look back at our time here on Plaza Drive fondly.

“Thank you, Mobile Housing Board, for giving us a home in the RV Taylor Housing Development to host all of our amazing programs and development of thousands of children and youth into outstanding citizens,” Burks explained. “I’m looking forward to seeing you  at our new location next year!”
