Remembering Bernard Malkove

Bernard Malkove

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama mourns Bernard Malkove:

Visionary, Philanthropist and Advocate

It is with great sadness to learn of the passing of Bernard Malkove, visionary, philanthropist, and advocate in our community. He was a real estate developer and served leadership roles in Mobile Lions Club, Real Estate Association, Rotary Club, Boys & Girls Clubs and other organizations. He was a community and civic leadership model, even being named “Mobilian of the Year” in 1998.

Although the community mourns his loss, the BGCSA family will miss him most. His efforts and leadership have improved the lives of Club kids since joining the Board in 1994. He served in various positions at the local and national levels. He served as a Board Officer, a member of the Executive Committee, Board Chairman, and Regional Trustee for the Southeast Region of Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Malkove’s passion for the Clubs gave him the vision to create an intergenerational facility to serve Club members and senior citizens. He worked with donors, government officials, and individuals to raise additional funds above the Providence Hospital’s commitment to building the new Club.  In 2019, Malkove was honored for his service by naming the Cody Rd Club in his honor as the “Bernard S. Malkove Branch”. The Bernard S. Malkove Branch is a staple in Hillsdale, Mobile Terrace, and West Mobile.

Malkove’s legacy will be forever connected to Boys & Girls Clubs. His advocacy for youth raised over $8 million dollars in funds over the years, including being a multi-year donor in the EB Peebles Giving Society himself.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Barbara Shepherd Malkove, his children and beloved grand-children.
